Aromatherapy is a familiar wellness tool for humans — but did you know your pets can benefit too? Just as essential oils can help reduce stress or relieve aches for people, they can do the same for animals. Animal aromatherapy is a holistic, non-invasive method to support the emotional and physical health of your pet using carefully selected essential oils.
What Exactly Is Animal Aromatherapy?
Animal aromatherapy involves the use of pure, plant-based essential oils to support a pet’s return to homeostasis — that is, a balanced, healthy state of body and mind. But unlike human aromatherapy, which is often therapist-led, animal aromatherapy is pet-led. That means your pet gets to select the oils themselves through a process called self-selection.
Many animals, especially dogs and cats, have retained the innate ability to choose natural remedies. In the wild, animals often sniff out plants or roll in specific herbs to relieve pain, irritation, or stress. Aromatherapy taps into this instinctual knowledge — giving your pet a say in their own healing.
How Does It Work?
At Animal Aromatherapy, we present your pet with a selection of safe, high-quality essential oils and observe their reactions. Some animals will lick the bottle, others may walk away. Their choices guide the formulation of a custom blend.
From there, we show you how to apply the oils safely — whether it’s diffused, applied to fur (with dilution), or in some cases, ingested (under specific guidance). The oils are non-addictive, plant-based, and contain no chemicals or synthetic additives.
This process supports recovery from issues like:
- Anxiety or separation stress
- Skin conditions or inflammation
- Joint pain and arthritis
- Digestive upset
- Emotional trauma or rescue anxiety
Do You Still Need a Vet?
Yes! Aromatherapy is not a replacement for medical treatment. If your dog breaks a bone or has an infection, the vet is your first stop. But aromatherapy can enhance healing and comfort alongside traditional treatment. We work in support of veterinary care — not in place of it.
Why Natural Healing Matters
Modern pet care often involves chemicals, medications, and invasive treatments. While sometimes necessary, these can come with side effects. Aromatherapy offers a gentler alternative — ideal for pets who are sensitive, aging, or recovering.
And the benefits don’t stop with pets — many of the same oils can be used by you and your family too.
